PRP Treatment in Istanbul
PRP treatment uses a preparation obtained from the patient’s own blood. After processing, the platelet-rich portion is applied or injected into selected areas according to the clinical objective.
PRP may be considered for certain hair-loss patterns, skin-quality concerns or as part of a wider treatment plan. It is not a universal solution for every type of hair loss, scar or skin-ageing concern.
At our clinic in Üsküdar, Istanbul, the first step is to identify the diagnosis and treatment goal before deciding whether PRP is appropriate.
What Is PRP?
PRP stands for platelet-rich plasma.
A small amount of blood is collected and processed to separate a plasma fraction containing a higher concentration of platelets. Platelets play a role in clotting and contain signalling proteins involved in tissue repair.
PRP is autologous, meaning it is prepared from the patient’s own blood. However, being autologous does not mean that the procedure is completely risk-free or that every preparation has the same biological properties.
Different PRP systems can produce different:
- Platelet concentrations
- White blood cell content
- Red blood cell contamination
- Activation methods
- Injection volumes
- Treatment protocols
This variation is one reason why research results and clinical protocols are not fully standardised.
What Is PRP Used For?
In aesthetic and hair practice, PRP may be assessed for:
- Pattern hair loss
- Selected cases of reduced hair density
- Support alongside a broader hair-loss plan
- Selected skin-quality concerns
- Certain scar-treatment combinations
- Recovery support in carefully planned procedures
Systematic reviews suggest that PRP may improve hair density or thickness in some patients with androgenetic alopecia, although study methods, preparation systems and treatment protocols vary.
Evidence for skin rejuvenation is promising but more heterogeneous. PRP should therefore be presented as a potential component of treatment rather than a guaranteed regenerative solution.
PRP for Hair Loss
Hair loss is not a single diagnosis.
Before PRP is considered, the physician may assess:
- Pattern and duration of shedding
- Family history
- Scalp findings
- Hair-shaft calibre
- Signs of inflammation or scarring
- Recent illness or weight change
- Nutritional factors
- Hormonal or metabolic contributors
- Current medications
- Previous hair treatments
PRP may be more relevant in selected non-scarring hair-loss patterns where active follicles remain. It cannot recreate follicles that are no longer present and should not delay the diagnosis of inflammatory or scarring alopecia.
Where appropriate, Hair Mesotherapy may be discussed as a separate treatment option rather than suggesting that the two are interchangeable.
PRP for Skin Quality
For skin-related concerns, PRP may be assessed for:
- General skin-quality support
- Selected texture concerns
- Fine superficial lines
- Combination with microneedling or other procedures
- Selected scar protocols
PRP does not replace volume loss like a dermal filler and does not relax muscles like botulinum toxin.
The likely benefit depends on:
- Ageing pattern
- Skin quality
- Treatment area
- Preparation method
- Delivery method
- Combination treatments
- Individual healing response
The treatment should be selected according to the actual concern rather than because PRP is described broadly as “regenerative.”
How Is PRP Prepared?
A blood sample is collected using sterile technique and placed into an appropriate processing system.
The sample is centrifuged to separate its components. The selected plasma fraction is then prepared for application.
The exact process varies according to the system. Factors such as centrifugation, tube composition and collection technique may affect the final preparation.
What Happens During Treatment?
The treatment area is cleaned. Depending on the indication, PRP may be applied through injections, microneedling or as part of another physician-planned procedure.
Patients may feel:
- Pinching
- Pressure
- Temporary burning
- Scalp sensitivity
- Mild discomfort during injection
Treatment duration depends on the area and technique.
How Many Sessions Are Needed?
There is no single evidence-based schedule that applies to every indication and every PRP preparation.
Treatment frequency may be influenced by:
- Diagnosis
- Baseline severity
- Treatment goal
- PRP preparation system
- Combination treatments
- Response to previous sessions
A series may be proposed in selected cases, followed by reassessment. More sessions should not be promised to create proportionally better results.
When Can Results Be Seen?
PRP does not produce an immediate final result.
For hair concerns, evaluation may require several months because the hair cycle changes slowly. Standardised photographs and, where possible, scalp assessment are more reliable than daily observation.
For skin-related concerns, temporary swelling may initially create a misleading impression. The final assessment should be made after the early reaction has settled.
What Are the Possible Side Effects?
Possible temporary effects include:
- Redness
- Swelling
- Tenderness
- Bruising
- Scalp sensitivity
- Pinpoint bleeding
- Headache after scalp treatment
- Temporary increase in shedding
- Infection, although uncommon with sterile technique
Because PRP is obtained from the patient’s blood, allergic reactions to the plasma itself are less likely than with a foreign injectable product. However, reactions to antiseptics, topical anaesthetics or other materials used during treatment are still possible.
Who May Not Be Suitable?
PRP may be postponed or avoided in the presence of:
- Active infection in the treatment area
- Certain platelet or blood disorders
- Significant anaemia
- Uncontrolled medical conditions
- Medications or conditions affecting clotting
- A clinical reason why blood collection or injection is inappropriate
Suitability should be determined through medical history and examination rather than a generic list alone.
PRP or Hair Mesotherapy?
PRP is prepared from the patient’s own blood. Hair mesotherapy involves intradermal delivery of selected substances to the scalp.
They differ in:
- Composition
- Evidence base
- Treatment rationale
- Protocol
- Suitability
- Risk profile
Neither should be selected before determining the type and cause of hair loss.
PRP for International Patients
International patients should avoid planning treatment too close to an important event or flight, particularly when scalp swelling, facial redness or bruising would be inconvenient.
Before arrival, it is helpful to share:
- Main concern
- Previous diagnosis
- Current hair-loss medications
- Blood-related medical history
- Previous PRP treatment
- Travel dates
Final suitability is confirmed in person.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is PRP a stem-cell treatment?
No. PRP is prepared from blood plasma and platelets. It should not be described as stem-cell therapy.
Can PRP stop every type of hair loss?
No. Treatment depends on the diagnosis. Scarring, inflammatory, hormonal and temporary shedding patterns require different evaluation.
Is PRP permanent?
No. Hair and skin conditions continue to change over time. Results and maintenance needs vary.
Can PRP be combined with other treatments?
It may be combined with selected treatments when appropriate, but combinations should be based on diagnosis rather than routine packages.
PRP Assessment in Üsküdar, Istanbul
The most important step is not the blood collection; it is determining whether PRP matches the diagnosis and treatment objective.
A clinically useful plan should explain what PRP may improve, what it cannot improve and how the response will be measured.
PRP, diagnosis and expectations in international patients
Platelet-rich plasma is prepared from a patient’s own blood, but this does not guarantee efficacy or eliminate every risk. For hair concerns, androgenetic alopecia, telogen shedding and inflammatory scalp disease require different management. For skin-quality goals, benefits depend on the indication and study protocol. PRP is not an automatic replacement for treatments with stronger evidence and should not be sold as a guaranteed hair-regrowth procedure.
Visiting Istanbul for PRP: consultation and follow-up
PRP consultations at Dr. Fuat Yurtseven’s clinic take place in Akasya Acıbadem, Üsküdar, Istanbul (Acıbadem Mah., Çeçen Sok., Akasya AVM Kent Etabı B1 Blok D:21). Before travelling, share previous scalp or skin treatments and relevant health conditions. Because outcomes may require observation over months and some protocols consider repeat sessions, an overseas visitor should discuss follow-up feasibility before planning a short stay. See International Patients for practical preparation.
